The China Cupboard

Christmas 1970 …My first visit to the house I have now lived in for 41 years.  The house where my husband had grown up.  Meeting his family for the first time.

In the dining room was a huge China cupboard with glass doors, stuffed full of dishes, knickknacks, plates, glasses, china.  Memories and collections of my husband’s family.   I was intrigued.

Flash forward about 9 months…college graduation, marriage, a first career job, and I was getting ready to move into that same house.

The China cupboard had been moved to town in a stately brick house on Market Street where my in-laws were moving.  It found a place in the kitchen of the brick house and I continued to study and admire it.

Flash forward 26 years.   Studying pieces and memories of the estate.  No one had room for the china cupboard except me.  The dishes, the knickknacks, the plates, the glasses, the china… we all claimed what we liked.  The rest went to an estate auction.

The China cupboard… now back to the house where I first saw it. Filled with new memories and collections.
