Corn

When I opened the back door I could smell the corn.  What a difference a day makes.  Farmers have one chance every growing season.   Sometimes it goes right and sometimes it goes wrong.  Our crops were planted early this spring because of beautiful weather.  But then we hit a long, dry spell.   The first measurable rainfall fell in our area on the 4th of July… it postponed the local fireworks display, but lifted the hopes of many area farmers.   You can smell the corn today and that’s good.   You can see the difference as well.   Stay tuned for the rest of the season…

We took a Sunday drive yesterday through an area of Virginia Beach called Pungo, which is all farmland. The corn looked beautiful. It has been so miserably hot and dry here lately that we worried all the corn would be dried up, but it looked good to us.

Thank goodness. I can just imagine the scent…the tilthe of the soil – apparently an old fashioned word. I can hardly wait to have some of that great corn.

  3. glad your corn is doing well – a rogue storm cleaned out some of the farmers in a neighbouring municipality (Harrow) and they have lost their corn crop for this year
