Here’s to the Crabgrass!
Before Weird Al Yancovic, there was Allen Sherman. He created some wonderfully funny musical parodies in the early 60’s that kids (and adults) enjoyed. I have to give credit to LouAnn http://onthehomefrontandbeyond.wordpress.com/2012/11/04/just-a-quick-thought/ Her post about crabgrass triggered one of my musical moments from the past.
Allen Sherman
You can read all about Allen Sherman if you are that interested. I just wanted to give this guy credit for creating some of the most funny tunes of my times… I was one of those kids who walked around singing almost all the time. I usually chose the most annoying songs which probably drove my parents nuts. John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith……♫♪ 99 bottles of beer …. ♫♪ and any Allen Sherman song I could learn. Later in college, I would sing Rocky Raccoon which drove my roommates a little daffy at times…once I got started I just couldn’t stop.
My favorite Allen Sherman song was Hello Muddah! Hello Faddah! I still have the sheet music to this because when I wasn’t singing it, I was playing it on the piano!

Just introduced my kids (ages 7 and 3) to the genius of Allan Sherman. Now they walk around singing, “If you go to the delicatessen store, don’t buy the liverwurst.” It’s awesome!

Yes, so loved that Hello Mudder Hello Fader song …. I remember it introduced me to the motion of poison ivy; had never heard of it til then. Must check out the other Sherman beauties.
I recall two annoying, but sticking songs from my childhood, called ” Right Said Fred” and ” Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It’s Flavour on the Bedpost Overnight?” English guy called Lonnie Donegan sang them. My mother nearly went mental cos there were eight of us and we ALL sang them over and over and over ………….

When i sent my children off to camp, I particularly appreciated the end bit that goes:
‘Wait a minute, it stopped hailing,
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing,
Playing baseball, gee that’s better,
Muddah Fadduh please disregard this letter.’
Not because they wrote to me, they enjoyed camp, no it’s because I couldn’t wait
for them to leave so I could have a break, but the moment they left, I wanted them to come back home.

I found Allan Sherman about 20 years too late, but now annoy the heck out of everyone within hearing distance with “if you go to the delicatessen store…don’t buy the liverwurst” and “say hello to your Uncle Max, my boy”. My 20 year old son knows the tongue-twisting Uncle Max song by heart, which impresses me no end.
We love Allan Sherman. Thanks for introducing him through your blog!

Oh my gosh! As soon as I saw Allen Sherman, I thought, “Hello Muddah! Hello Faddah!” Did you have the board game, too? We wore ours out when we were kids. I bought one on eBay for our son when he was little, because I couldn’t have the boy growing up without Camp Granada. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWeO0HUn850 Thanks, Ruth!
