Jenn was now tall enough to peer over the top of the bottom windowsill.  Standing on tippy-toes, she saw the park across the street;  the familiar voices  she heard when the sky was bright blue rang out loud and clear.

All alone in the huge apartment, she searched, as she did every day, for a way out. Once she had made it to the hallway, when they had forgotten to lock the door.  Her excitement died quickly when she came to the steel doors that blocked the entrance to the stairway.

I don’t understand, she thought.  What have I done wrong?

  2. Good and well done story. It’s sad she’s alone and so young, and it’s sad if a parent feels the need to do that because they can’t afford to hire care for her. It does happen.

  3. No matter why she was alone, it isn’t good. I hope someone finds her soon and gets her out. Nice job of showing a scary situation without overdoing it and leaving us to imagine why this is happening.

Poor thing! But maybe it would be unsafe for her to escape … ?

wow … she could be locked in for bad reasons (no explanation needed) or locked in for safety (a single parent with no money for childcare). Either way … I want her out!!

  8. Dear Ruth,

Sad that she’s left alone. But being as small as she is, I’m wondering how much is her imagination. Nice one.

Aw . . . how sad. I once lived in a little house that had a closet with multiple locks on the outer door. I have always shuddered to think of why.
