5:23 PM.

Chris watched for her.  Sometimes she wore a red scarf.  She was always in a hurry.

Today, he would do it.

5:24 PM.

She should be here by now.   No sign of her coming down the sidewalk.

He had practiced this moment, day after day.   Her routine was clockwork.

5:25 PM.

Chris paced around the street sign.  I’ll give her another minute or two, he thought.

This was not like her.  He didn’t know her name.  He didn’t know where she came from.

He just knew she was like clockwork.

5:26 PM.

Damn. The planning was for nothing.

He walked away.

Great stuff – a nice missed connection story. I interpreted a clear moral in it too – “don’t wait too long, you might miss your chance”.

  2. Good story – kept me guessing – still am – and that’s a good thing! Some 100 word stories don’t need an end.

As with some of the others, I didn’t know if Chris’s purpose was for good or evil … and i guess we’ll never know (unless you tell us)

Oh no, a broken heel, a look in a window, a remembered friend…

    Dear Lit50’sab,

I kept waiting for her to whack him over the head as her victim, chosen because he was like clockwork. Even though it didn’t happen that way, I enjoyed your story very much.

I had a kind of uneasy feeling as this story progressed. It was de-fused at the end but the ride was skilfully executed. Well done.

  8. Dear Ruth,

Maybe his clock was running fast that day. Or maybe she realized he was stalking her. I like the way you left the story open to the imagination.

I’m chuckling. He waited 3 minutes? I hope he looks up the word patience and gives her another chance 🙂

His problem is he thinks he’s got her all worked out, but he’s wrong. Maybe she’s been watching him, and is keeping him on his toes. I really like your approach – I can almost hear the clodk ticking.

  11. Do what? Ask her out? Kill her? I enjoyed it even though the ending didn’t show up. 🙂

A great representation of the anxiety one experiences when they see the person they just know is meant for them, only to learn the universe has a different plan. Thoroughly enjoyed this story.

All that planning for nothing, huh? I feel bad for him, but it makes me laugh a little bit. This always seems to happen when you plan for an encounter. The one day you make a plan, something changes it and it doesn’t come together. I enjoyed this a lot.
