I’m not a good blogger. In fact, when I became a blogger I didn’t even know you could be a good one or a not so good one. I just wanted to get my thoughts in written form before I forgot them. I did not have dreams of having hundreds or thousands of followers. I didn’t even know there were followers. I guess you might say I jumped in with little preparation. I’m good at that.
I don’t follow the blogging rules. I’ve read a gazillion articles on how to have a successful blog and I have even tried some of the suggestions. But I’m just not consistent enough. You are supposed to have a point when you write a blog. I do not always have a point. My point is, I am writing this stuff down so I don’t forget it. And I guess that’s not really a point.
Images are important for a blog to be successful. For awhile I always put some type of image into my blog. It does make it look pretty. Then I read that you can’t just use any old image that you find on the internet. (That’s where I found most of mine.) If the image belongs to someone else, you have to have their permission to use it and then give them credit for the image. Guess what? That’s a lot of work! So during my second year of blogging, I went back through all of my blogs and deleted images that I shouldn’t have used. That was really productive. Again, I jumped in without doing my homework.
Successful blogs, I am told, are usually between 1000 and 1500 words. Epic fail on that one. My best blogs are the 100 word fiction posts.
Links can help you get more exposure and more followers. I still have trouble linking to NaBloPoMo and Friday Fictioneers. Mr. Linky and I do not see eye to eye.
Spelling and grammar I am good at. See how I ended that sentence with a preposition? Really, if you are on WordPress, there, their, they’re is a spelling and grammar check always available for your use.
Most writers tell you to write your blog, then let it sit for a few hours, or a couple of days, or even longer. Then go back and edit the heck out of it. This does work. But who has time for that? I usually write and publish immediately and then several days later read it again and go back and update, all the while thinking… how could I have written that and sent it out to the world.
There is one rule that I follow. I have found that it really has helped me do a better job of writing in general. Read your blog out loud. I have been surprised at the mistakes and awkward sentence structures I have discovered just by listening to what I have written. It works for me.
What are some rules you follow when you write?
Following the rules sounds like work to me, and blogging is suppose to be fun. 🙂 I think the ones who follow the rules are also the ones who spend hours a day on the net working their social media sites to get more ‘likes,’ more ‘friends,’ more ‘shares,’ and then sit and stare at their stats. I never willingly look at my stats. What I live for are the comments. To think that a person read what I wrote and then took a minute or two out of their busy day to make a comment gives me an adrenalin rush. Keep writing and just do it your way. 🙂

I try to follow the basic ‘rules’ of writing with respect to spelling, grammar and punctuation. My goal with blogging (as well as other writing) is to put down words (as sentences and paragraphs) that other people will read and enjoy (or think about, at least). I’m not nearly as consistent as I used to be with my blog (maybe I’ve run out of things to say – LOL) but I like reading blogs like yours because I can relate to what you write. Don’t stop now!

Thanks Margo. It is hard to come up with things to say after a while…. I just don’t want to sound like I am blabbering about nothing. lol

I’ve always thought you’ve done a great job blogging, Ruth. You could probably post that grocery list with your idea on it, and I would find it interesting. 🙂

Thanks to you. I am not sure my grocery list would be that interesting. lol

I try to write posts the night before and edit before I publish the next morning. But editing at 6am while preparing to go to work doesn’t always work. I like the suggestion about reading the draft out loud. Fortunately there is usually no one around in my house at 6am.

I never could have posted in the morning while I was still working. Too crazy!

I usually prepare my drafts days ahead but usually never used them. I have a notebook that I carry around with me for ideas and I don’t even use the ideas in that book. I am so happy you wrote this because THIS is exactly what I identify with. But like you I do read my posts aloud and that usually brings me to some realisation that there is usually a mistake somewhere. 🙂

Thanks! You can “hear” those mistakes when sometimes you can’t see them.

You’ve learned a lot, but like you, I don’t follow the rules either. Sit on a post for days? No way. I’d definitely delete it then. I have to get it out while I’m passionate about it, otherwise it’ll likely sound pointless. However, I do read my posts out loud and you’re right – a lot of mistakes are caught that way.

Yes… losing the passion. Its a fleeting thing with me and if I dont jump on it right away, its gone! Thanks for the comment.

I sure could relate to this post! I am an atypical blogger, as well – AND horribly inconsistent! my posts are usually so hastily written that they’re riddled with mistakes. Unfortunately, I find that if I don’t just post something, no matter how imperfect, no matter how harried things are, it might not happen at all! I’ll forget about it, or it just loses its relevance. I figure I can always go back and fix things for posterity. At least it’s written down! 🙂

Like that missing capital on ‘my’… 😉

I get that! I often have these wonderful ideas for a blog and maybe I will even jot it down on my grocery list and by the time I get home I have no clue why I thought it was so wonderful! LOL

Following the rules kind of takes the fun out of it, doesn’t it? We each have our own reasons or goals for blogging, so no pathway is going to be the same. Glad you’re still doing what you do!
