My First Audience (Memoir)

On Sunday afternoons, Great Aunt Martha’s  little black Studebaker would pull into our driveway and Aunt Martha and Grandma would emerge for “the visit”.   They would often bring fresh flowers from their gardens, wrapped in tissue paper with a damp rag surrounding the bottom of the stems.

As soon as the flowers were placed in an appropriate vase, I was summoned to the piano.  I would play several tunes, usually my current lesson pieces from the week.  They would clap their hands and exclaim what a wonderful pianist I was.   Hugs were exchanged and the smell of lemon and lavender followed them out the door.

  2. What a really “nice” story and I don’t mean that in a bad way! Brought to mind piano recitals, which I have to say made me excessively nervous. 🙂 This story was a little slice of nostalgic life.

  4. Dear Life,

Welcome to Friday Fictioneers. This piece brought back a few memories for me. Nicely done. My parents’ first car was a brown, 1953 Chevrolet. They had that car for the first 8 years of my life. 😉 Again. Welcome.

    Shalom,

My aunt and uncle had an old blue 1950 Ford. I remember going to their house and the wonderful smells that were so different from home.

Hmmm. This would be fun to see what everyone did for their first audience and who that audience was. I think my first one was when we’d go to Grandma’s house my older sister would devise a plan to have herself and her two siblings (my younger sister and I) to entertain. It gave us something to do while the adults chatted over coffee and pie. I remember singing “Home On The Range” (complete with a fake campfire we’d made) and “Daisy.” There we’d be, Lisa, the cute and charming little one, I, the gangly ornery one, and Becky the responsible, dependable and reliable one. What a crew we were but they clapped heartily and smiled a lot. I don’t know how but we learned to harmonize (??). Thanks for helping me dig out that memory.
