Hindsight 20/20

Dee found it hard to believe how easy it was to dissolve a business that had taken her 40 years to build.

The move to the uptown location had been too pricey, and the timing of the market crash hadn’t helped.

Dee sat in the empty board room.

She grimaced as she looked at the pathetic arrangement of flowers sent by her biggest competitor, and cried as she gazed at the smaller arrangement sent by her “loyal” secretary, who had been with her from the start.

Good employees were hard to find.

Dee should have been less trusting.

Loyalty is difficult for employees and employers. If conditions are better elsewhere, why should an employee stay who hasn’t some investment, emotional or otherwise, in the business? Good story, I hope she can retire in some comfort after fourty years.

Cutthroat world out there. I hope she can look forward to a pleasant new beginning–maybe by retiring 🙂

  4. They say it’s a dog-eat-dog world. I guess she’s found it so. Now to pick up the pieces and move on without becoming bitter and nasty herself.
Good and unusual take on the prompt.

It’s sad that to succeed in business these days you have to adopt the attic of trusting no one. What a world we live in. Nice take.

If you don’t know whom to trust, you don’t deserve to be in business. That’s my mantra. Better, don’t trust anyone. They might call you names, but hey, that’s just a small price for success. Well written, Ruth. Felt like shouting at Dee for her blunder.
